Inpatient/Outpatient Coder
Van Buren County Hospital is seeking a Full-Time Inpatient/Outpatient Coder to support accurate coding, billing, reporting, and regulatory compliance across hospital services. This position reviews clinical documentation and assigns appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient and outpatient encounters.
The successful candidate will work closely with Health Information Management, Revenue Cycle, and clinical departments to support accurate reimbursement and regulatory compliance. Initial training will occur onsite, with the opportunity to transition to a primarily remote work arrangement after successful completion of training and competency validation.

Primary Responsibilities
- Review inpatient and outpatient medical records for coding accuracy
- Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and professional service codes
- Code and abstract patient encounters in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Review clinical documentation and identify coding opportunities or discrepancies
- Assist with billing edits, denials, and coding-related error resolution
- Analyze coding trends and identify opportunities for process improvement
- Maintain coding accuracy and productivity standards
- Support regulatory compliance and data integrity initiatives
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
- Perform additional HIM-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- RHIT, CCS, CPC, or equivalent coding credential preferred
- Previous inpatient and/or outpatient coding experience preferred
- Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and healthcare reimbursement methodologies
- EPIC experience preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while maintaining productivity and accuracy standards
Work Arrangement
- Onsite training and onboarding required for approximately 90 days
- Opportunity to transition into a primarily remote work arrangement based on performance, competency, and departmental needs
