Surgical Nurse
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Provide professional nursing care to surgical patients across the perioperative continuum

Apply principles of surgical asepsis and sterile technique
-
Function as scrub nurse and/or circulating nurse as assigned
-
Prepare and position patients to prevent complications and ensure safety
-
Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments
-
Operate and assist with specialized OR and central sterile equipment
-
Administer medications, IV therapy, wound care, and other nursing interventions
-
Rotate into wound treatment and infusion services as operational needs require
-
Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the EHR
-
Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing staff, and families
-
Participate in discharge planning, patient education, and care coordination
-
Maintain compliance with infection control, safety standards, and hospital policies
Qualifications
-
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
-
Current Iowa RN license or compact license eligible to practice in Iowa
-
BLS required
-
ACLS required or willingness to obtain
-
Previous OR experience preferred; cross-training supported
-
Strong clinical judgment, teamwork, and communication skills
Work Environment
-
Hospital operating room and outpatient clinical settings
-
Exposure to surgical environments, equipment, latex, and clinical chemicals
-
Physical requirements include standing, lifting, pushing/pulling, and fine motor skills
