Registered Nurse - Day Shift (Mon, Tues, & Fri) 12 Hour Shift

Overview

This position is licensed under the provisions of the Professional Nursing Practice Act of the State of Iowa who practices professional nursing as defined by law. Registered Nurses perform a wide variety of job duties during their shift, caring for and educating patients about their conditions, as well as, establishing trust and building rapport with the patient and their family.  RN’s at VBCH may cross-train to Emergency Department or other departments as necessary (Operating room, treatment room, wound, cardiopulmonary rehab, clinic, etc.).

Position Essential Functions

• Assumes responsibility of promoting continuity of care by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care of the acute, sub-acute, convalescent, chronically ill and critically ill patient.
• Demonstrates adequate and safe execution of nursing procedures and technical skills.
• Administers medications, wound care, and other medical interventions.
• Responsible for responding to Trauma Alert and carry out roles/responsibilities as described in the Trauma Plan.
• Interprets patient information and makes critical decision about needed actions.
• Accurately records and reports the patient’s condition including evaluation of the whole patient.  Records it promptly into the EHR.
• Direct and supervised care delivered by other healthcare personnel; licensed practical nurses and certified nurses’ aides.
• Does an in-depth assessment of the newly admitted patient and establishes a nursing care plan specific and individualized for the patient.
• Develops with the patient and family a teaching plan for the patient.
• Teaches patients about their disease so they have adequate knowledge to manage their medical conditions and an insight to know when medical advice is needed.
• Initiates and assists in discharge planning on each patient.
• Communicates information regarding the patient’s status to other health professionals.
• Participates actively, and volunteers where he/she has expertise and experience.
• Responsible for the interpretation and execution of the LIPS orders.
• Coordinates care/services with other ancillary departments and the medical staff when appropriate.
• Performs nursing care with due consideration to the patient and personal safety.
• Assumes responsibility for equipment and reports defective or unsafe equipment promptly.
• Attends nursing meetings and continuing education programs and applies knowledge learned.
• Actively participates and searches for opportunities for personal and professional growth.
• Performs such other duties as designated by the CNO, Medical Surgical Manager and/or the CEO.
• Knows philosophy, objectives, and policies of the hospital.
• Promotes team-work between co-workers to enhance quality of patient care.
• Demonstrates acceptance and supports contributions from other staff members.
• Demonstrates professionalism in language and conduct.
• Maintains strict patient and hospital confidentiality.
• Responsible for in-patients and out-patients as designated by the Patient Care Supervisor.

Med / Surg RN Duties

• Understands and practices the principles of sterile technique for procedures
• Operates equipment within the Med Surg.
• Position patients to prevent complications such as pressure points or skin breakdown.
• Create, follow and evaluate med surg standard work
• Passes medications
• Provides excellent patient care
• Supports and works as a team with teammates in department and others

Education, Certification, & Experience Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent is required
• Graduation from accredited school of nursing
• Licensed to practice in the State of Iowa or in a compact state
• BLS Certification
• ACLS Certification, or willing to obtain

Emergency Department Certifications

• TNCC Certification
• PALS Certification or willing to obtain within one year of hire
